Getting a Bursary

Posted by rentastudent | January 16, 2017 | Info and General Requests, Recent News, Student Blog

Apply early bursary

Getting a bursary is getting harder year by year as more and more students compete for the same assistance. While there is no way to guarantee that you get selected, there are a few things that you can do to improve your chances.

Apply early

Don’t wait till you reach your matric year to look for financial aid opportunities.

By the time you enter Grade 10 you should have started to think seriously about potential careers.

Research which higher education institutions offer study programmes that correspond with your career choice.

Find out about entrance requirements, course fees and funding opportunities and apply for these as soon as possible.

Early application also eliminates the stress often caused by postponing such an important task.

Work hard at school

Don’t make the minimum entrance requirements for a study programme your academic goal.

Go beyond what is expected.

The quickest way to get the attention of a company or potential benefactor is through your marks.

Sponsors are not only looking for the most disadvantaged student.

They want to select a student that is going to make a positive contribution to society.

Show interest in your community

As mentioned before your success is not merely determined by the actual application process but rather by the work you do before you apply.

In some cases applicants will be required to provide relevant real life examples of where they have demonstrated initiative, determination and hard work.

Using community work as a reference is a good way to show these traits.

Displaying entrepreneurial and leadership qualities outside of school will set you apart from other applicants.

Make a point of participating in community work or extra mural activities that will enhance your application.

Follow application directions

Different companies offer different types of bursary opportunities at different times during the year.

Find out in advance which legal documents must be included and where to apply for the bursary.

You may need to certify documents which will require additional time and effort.

In most cases you will be asked to fill out a bursary form and return it via post, email or through an online application process.

Whether or not you are selected to receive a particular bursary it always pays to do your research, be prepared and work hard.

There may be a different opportunity waiting for you on the horizon.

Higher Education and Training Minister, Dr Blade Nzimande, has identified short to medium term, and long term plans, as part of the roadmap, to transform post-school education and training.

Addressing the National Assembly on the current university situation, Minister Nzimande said in the short term, government has announced a number of interventions to assist students who come from poor and middle class families, and for the first time in the history of post-school education, the so-called “missing middle”.

All students from “missing middle” families will experience a no fee increase in the 2017 academic year. “This means it is no fee increment in 2017 for this category of students. This will benefit more than 75% of university and college students, and in some institutions, more than 90% of students will benefit,” said Minister Nzimande.

“We have also gone further and made arrangements through the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) to pay the registration fees for all NSFAS funded students as an upfront payment to universities and Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges in January each year.

“Therefore, NSFAS qualifying students will not pay any registration or upfront fees in 2017. Students from households with an annual family income of up to R600 000, i.e. the ‘missing middle’ will be allowed to register without paying any upfront or registration fees in 2017,” Minister Nzimande said.

He said government has also addressed the issues of historical debt of students, and all NSFAS qualifying students who are registered in 2016, having historical student debt with institutions of higher education, will be allowed to register in 2017.

“All universities will ensure that ‘missing middle’ students who have historical student debt are not excluded on the basis of debt and will also be allowed to register in 2017.

“We also wish to draw to the attention of students who are still studying or are in their first year of employment, that NSFAS will only collect debt from all graduates a year after they finished their studies.”

Long term plan

For the long term, Minister Nzimande said the department has recently received a report from the Chairperson of the NSFAS Board, Sizwe Nxasana, on the development of support and funding model for poor and “missing middle” students.

He said the report will go a long way in not only addressing the funding problems by poor and “missing middle” students, but also in addressing among other challenges the NSFAS model itself.

“The report also received the backing from a range of stakeholders including business leaders who are part of the solution and will improve the partnership between government, the private sector and higher education institutions.”

The department is processing the report and will be presented to Cabinet for consideration and decision.

Draft Policy, Revised Funding Framework for Universities

Meanwhile, Minister Nzimande said the department is processing a draft Policy and Revised Funding Framework for Universities, which emanated from the recommendations of the report from the Ministerial Committee on the Review of the Funding of Universities, which was led by the now Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa.

The report reviews the experiences of six years of partial and full implementation of the current funding framework for universities. It also analyses the current funding framework to determine whether it has functioned effectively in achieving the goals set for it at its inception.

Commission of Inquiry

The Minister said the Commission of Inquiry established by President Jacob Zuma to inquire into, report on and make recommendations on the feasibility of a fee free higher education and training, continues to do its work and has undertaken to release its preliminary report in November 2016.

“We call on all stakeholders to provide support to enable the Commission to speedily conclude its work so that it can contribute to finding long-term solutions.” – SAnews.gov.za

WOW ….

We hate to say this, but we are disappointed with the lack of attention to detail from some students applying for part-time paid work via our platform. Rent-a-Student is a non-profit organsation trying to HELP students! We have businesses asking for students non-stop and our reputation means students get good pay!!

Rent a Student was formed to help students. Employers (in the main) want to help students, but the quality of applications has declined!! When we ask for a photograph – we need a photograph, when we ask for a CV we need a CV, when we say the job is in Johannesburg and students apply from Cape Town it is NOT acceptable! When students apply and then do not show it is totally unacceptable. YES that is the reality, students apply for positions and when given the position, they fail to show up = lost client = bad reputation = the end of this Non-Profit … PLEASE Respect us, respect yourself, respect the clients wanting to help students.

We give work experience to over 1,000 students a month, we have a minimum wage policy of R40 per hour, so please only apply if you have read the brief and can do the JOB.

PLEASE, remember that first impressions count.

PS – Congratulations to the many students who do excellent work! We are proud to have you on-board!

Cape Town – Students held a University of the Western Cape staffer hostage on Tuesday as a negotiating tool during protests at its Bellville campus, the institution said.

“It is not acceptable that in a university setting students would hold a staff member against his will and use that as a condition for engagement,” it said in a letter to the “university community”.

The students said they would release him on condition a university mass meeting was held on Monday. And, that a meeting between the vice chancellor and students scheduled for 16:00 on Tuesday, include a larger group of protesting students.

Further details of how the staffer was freed were not immediately available. The university said late on Tuesday it would investigate the incident and take steps where necessary.

It deplored the incident in the light of ongoing talks to resolve students’ issues.

The campus is across the road from the Cape Peninsula University of Technology, which has been part of the Fees Must Fall protests countrywide.

A minibus was torched at the CPUT Cape Town campus on Tuesday.

Interview Outfits – Part 1

Posted by rentastudent | August 6, 2016 | Info and General Requests, Recent News, Student Blog

So, you have researched the company and can recite your key achievements. You have looked up your interviewer on Social Media.

But have you thought about what you’re going to wear to your interview? A recent survey found that 33% of bosses know within 90 seconds whether they’ll hire someone, 60% indicated that an outfit could be a deciding factor between two near identical candidates. Our clothes make up an important part of our appearance. This does not mean spending a fortune, but it does mean working out what’s appropriate for your role.

In a series of articles we will example the typical “outfit” for a range of Job interviews starting with:

Admin/HR/Secretarial

A smart but less formal approach for candidates should be adhered to for these roles, “For women a great option is a smart dress teamed with a jacket or even a fine-knit fitted cardigan. Men could team a blazer with a slim leg chino and a crisp white shirt. Brown brogues look very stylish with a chino. It’s advisable for men to wear a tie in most interview situations.

Non Standard Employees – Part 1

Posted by rentastudent | June 15, 2016 | Info and General Requests, job listing, Recent News, Student Blog

More and more workers are operating outside the traditional confines of regular, full time employment. They may be free agents or elancers, that is freelancers in the digital world who work for themselves. Or they may be employees of an organization your firm is allied with. Employees of an outsourcing or temporary help firm or even volunteers. Last year, almost 18 million people worked as non-standard employees for 15 hours or more a week. Software maker Intuit estimates that 40% of the workforce will be non-standard employees by 2020.

It’s already happening now in a number of industries. In terms of the kinds of work available, it’s not just low level clerical tasks. It’s also managerial and professional work. Think accounting and finance, information technology or marketing. One of the payoffs from using non-standard employees is that they may be cheaper than their full-time counterparts, especially since they typically are not eligible for benefits. Moreover, the size of the workforce can expand or contract as necessary based on the demand for particular services. More generally, companies can tailor the skill sets they need to fit the work to be done without hiring and firing full-time employees.

At the same time, there are risks associated with non-standard employee workers. Will they be as committed as full-timers? Will their rapid turnover require extensive orientation and training of new ones? Will they stick around long enough to develop the kind of depth of understanding of people and operations that will enable them to contribute meaningfully? In terms of managing and integrating work, there are three broad considerations. The first consideration is strategy.

Namely, considering the overall work to be done, which parts of it are core, proprietary operations that need to stay in-house and whichparts might be done elsewhere. Consider Nike or Apple for example. In both cases, a core competency is design. The look, feel and functionality of the product. Both firms design their products in-house and then outsource the actual manufacture of the products elsewhere.Design allows Nike and Apple to retain activities that are at the very top of the value chain and to outsource those lower in the value chain.

A second consideration is procurement. More specifically, procuring the kinds of knowledge, skills and abilities that are necessary to do the work that non-standard employees can do. This is where talent platforms can be extremely helpful. A talent platform is simply an internet enabled marketplace that matches work to free agents. Amazon’s Mechanical Turk for example was originally built to solve Amazon’s own internal data processing problems.

To do that, it created a platform where work could be broken up into tiny pieces called microtasks and distributed to a low-cost workforce.Examples of microtasks include information gathering such as completing a survey, or photo and video processing for example, tagging images. This approach is inherently global for once you post work on a digital talent platform you won’t know and you may not care where the work is being done.

The final consideration is accountability. Managing means getting work done through other people and following through to ensure it’s done properly. Managers have to be exquisitely clear about their expectations for deliverables and they need to specify four parameters in great detail. By when, that is time. In what quantity. At what level of quality. And at what cost. When the deliverables arrive, managers need to check to ensure that the deliverables meet the standards previously set for timeliness, quantity, quality, and cost.

In summary, when the boundaries of an organization are no longer fixed as is happening more and more these days, then non-standard employees may do at least some of an organization’s work. In order to manage and integrate that work into ongoing operations, managers need to do three things well. Determine which elements of work must be done in-house and which can be farmed out to non-standard employees. Procure the kinds of knowledge, skills and abilities that are necessary to do the work that will be farmed out.

And specify in detail four dimensions of expectations about deliverables. Time, quantity, quality and cost. Do these three things well and you’ll be well on your way towards developing an overall strategy for managing and integrating work when organizational boundaries are permeable.
